Tips for Employing Teenagers this Summer

Summer is here and teenagers are looking for a job! Last year more than 6 million teens were employed for some part of the summer; this was the highest number since 2008. With the rise of employed teenagers, it is essential that your company remains aware of and in compliance with state and federal child labor laws.

If you are going to hire teenagers, here are a few tips:

1.Verify the age of every minor hired.

2.Make sure they complete all of your standard employment-related documentation (W-4, I-9, handbook, etc.)

3.Limit your communication with their parents... they are not your employee.

4.If considering the minor for a driving position (they must be at least 17 years of age) Check this US DOL Fact Sheet.
